ロボットの研究開発に取り組む独ボッシュ
Silicon Valley RoboticsについてWall Street Journal 日本版のコラムで書いた。
このグループの中心メンバーのひとつが独ボッシュ。私は今年3月にこのSilicon Valley Roboticsの会合に初めて参加し、その会場となったボッシュのパロアルト研究所を訪れた。そこでは、集まった地元のロボット関係者に対し、Willow Garage社の「PR2」を使ったロボットのデモが行われた。ロボットがTシャツをたたむデモだ。
Willow Garage社はPR2のベータ・プログラムと称して、ロボットを11台、世界の研究機関に無償提供したが、唯一の民間企業としてこのプログラムに参加しているのがボッシュ。PR2のソフトはオープンソースで、このプログラムの研究開発成果は基本的に公開されるため、どうして民間企業であるボッシュが参加したのか、また参加できたのか、ずっと気になっていた。
この集まりで私が知ったのは、ボッシュ・グループの親会社であるRobert Bosch GmbHが非公開企業であり、かなりフットワークの軽い会社であるということ。同社で研究開発に携わるのは世界で33,000人、研究開発費は2010年に40億ユーロ（約4,620億円）。このうち、「ロボット」の研究開発に携わっているのは40人で、うち6人がシリコンバレーのパロアルト研究所に在籍する。研究開発全体から見ればまだ小さいが、将来性の高い分野と社内では期待されている。
パロアルト研究所のロボット研究のリーダー、Jan Becker氏によると、ここで取り組んでいる研究内容は5つ。
1) Affordable sensing for PR2
2) Touchless proximity sensor
3) Shared autonomy
4) PR2 Remote Lab with Brown University
5) 3D mapping exploration
またボッシュが、病院用の搬送ロボットを開発販売する米Aethon社に、傘下VCを通じて投資していることもここで初めて知った。
同社がPR2ベータ・プログラムに選ばれたときに出したプレスリリースはここ。この中から抜粋すると、
The robotics team at Bosch Research and Technology Center North America (RTC) will focus on developing solutions for the personal robotics market by making robots safe, affordable and capable. The Bosch robotics team in Palo Alto closely collabo-rates with experts of the Bosch Corporate Research based in Stuttgart, Germany, who bring in additional expertise in sensing, signal processing and manufacturing. Research topics will comprise utilization of advanced sensor devices and advance-ment of robot human interaction.
The researchers will integrate advanced Bosch sensor technology, such as MEMS accelerometers, gyros and force sensors and air pressure sensors, in the PR2 to enable new applications and to accelerate the wide-scale deployment of robot tech-nology in new commercial and private environments. Bosch will supply a sensing system to allow touchless human robot interaction with the PR2 and increase robot safety through near range sensing. Also, Bosch will explore how a human can effec-tively interact with a PR2. Including a human in the loop will improve the robot’s per-formance and reliability. These improvements will allow robots to be deployed earli-er, at lower cost and in more complex environments. In addition, the Bosch re-searchers will also use the PR2 for automatic mapping and reconstruction of 3D en-vironments.
ボッシュの持つ様々なセンサー技術をPR2のようなロボットに搭載してみて、新しいアプリケーションを見出したい考えのようだ。
ちなみに、日本ではボッシュといえば一般的に自動車部品メーカー（世界最大手）と考えられているが、実はグループ会社を通じて家電の大手であることも付記しておきます。（うちのアイロンはボッシュ製。） だから、無人ロボット車にも関心があるし、家事支援ロボットにも関心がある会社です。
Bosch RTC で他の研究をしていた人に聞いた話ですが，研究成果の公開に関しては厳しい規則があるらしく，ロボティクスは基幹事業に未だなっていないからフレキシブルなのかもとのことでした．早く基幹になって”企業秘密です”となって欲しいですねー．
